About Trip

This classic trek takes us up the Langtang Valley, regarded as a ‘beyul’ or refuge established many hundreds of years ago by Padmasambhava (also known as Guru Rinpoche) to be revealed in a time of need. The lower valley is inhabited mainly by members of the Tamang ethnic group while from Langtang Village upwards ethnic Tibetans are in the majority. The landscape ranges from shady forests, to open hillsides and majestic mountains, especially Langtang Lirung (7227m).

Best Season: March to May and September to November. Late March to the end of April is particularly recommended due to the abundance of rhododendron blooms to be found at that time.

Notes: Like all of our treks, the guide/organizer reserves the right to adjust the itinerary in accordance with weather conditions and/or other factors.

Add-ons: A number of add-ons are possible by prior arrangement, including the 2-day/1-night camping trek from Kyanjin Gompa to Shisha Kharka.

  • Day 03Drive to Syabrubesi (1303m): 5-6 hoursAn early morning start as after a hotel pick up we go by jeep to Syabrubesi via Trishuli.
  • Day 04Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel (2410m) 6-7 hoursWe begin our trek and gradual acclimatization today with a 1000m altitude gain to Lama Hotel. The path winds mainly through forested slopes, with a riverside lunch break at Bamboo Lodge. It’s a challenging uphill path for two hours after that to reach our overnight stop at Lama Hotel.
  • Day 05Lama Hotel to Langtang Village (3430m) 5-6 hoursAnother 1000m altitude gain today as we progress from wooded slopes and a rhododendron forest to reach more open landscapes by the time we stop for lunch at Ghodatabela. Before reaching Langtang Village and our overnight stop, we cross the eerie rock-strewn valley which resulted from an avalanche and rockslide triggered by the Gorkha Earthquake of 2015.
  • Day 06Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gomba (3830m): 4-5 hoursA relatively easy half-day hike with an altitude gain of only 400m takes us to our final objective: Kyanjin Gompa. The trail is lined with symbols of Tibetan Buddhism, including mani walls and chortens. Lunch is in our comfortable hotel in Kyanjin, then free time to rest, explore the village and maybe indulge in some of the bakery items available.
  • Day 07In and around Kyanjin Gomba This morning you can either rest at leisure or climb up to Kyanjin Ri (4300m) which affords fantastic views of Langtang Lirung and its glaciers. A more strenuous option to summit Tserko Ri (4984m) may also be available.
  • Day 08Kyanjin Gomba to Thyangsyapu Village (3140m) 5-6 hoursToday we start to retrace our steps down the Valley, perhaps after buying some of Kyanjin’s famous yak cheese. After stopping for lunch at Langtang Village we press on to Thyangsyapu Village for our overnight stay.
  • Day 09Thyangsyapu to Sherpagaon (2563m) 6-7 hours In the morning we continue to retrace our steps as far as Lama Hotel (lunch). However unlike most itineraries, after Rimche we break away from our old path and trek upwards on the dramatic northern slopes of the valley to Sherpagaon, a dramatic 1600m above Bamboo Lodge far below. We spend the night at Sherpagaon.
  • Day 10Sherpagaon to Syabrubesi (1303m) 5-6 hoursOn our final day’s trekking the trail continues high above the valley before finally starting the long (about 1200 m.) drop down back to Syabrubesi via a lunch stop at Khanjim.
